- Foundation
Center. Excellent starting place for foundation and corporate
foundation research. Free access to basic listings (Foundation
Finder) and 990s for all nonprofit organizations. More comprehensive
databases are fee-based, but can be accessed for free at the Foundation
Center’s D.C. library on K Street. Sign up for the free monthly
e-newsletter.
- Guidestar.
Listing of all nonprofit organizations that file 990s. Free access
to 990s of private and corporate foundations. Recently moved to a
fee-based service, with different levels. It is important to check
both Guidestar and the Foundation Center’s Foundation Finder,
as foundations are not always listed in both places.
- Council
on Foundations. Listing of 2,000 grantmakers with links to
their web sites. Be sure to check links for the Affinity Group
Network, which includes grantmaker organizations such as Funders
Concerned about AIDS, Grantmakers in Health, etc.

that can be searched by topic area or alphabetically. Free registration
is required to access resources.

association of private foundations, public foundations, operating
foundations, charitable trusts, other grantmaking programs, and
individual philanthropists who make significant contributions in
the peace and security field.
- GrantsDirect.
Fee-based, comprehensive database of Washington/Baltimore area grantmakers.
Particularly good source for smaller, newer, and family foundations
in Maryland.
- Women’s
Funding Network.
Affinity group of grantmakers focused on women and girls.

Net Services.
Listings of foundation grants for a variety of issue areas and
programs.
- School
Grants, Resources for K-12 schools, both public and private.
- Council
for Exceptional Children’s Information Center on Disabilities
and Gifted Education. Excellent list on funding for special
education schools.
